Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

TryMyJob (trymyjob.org) is run by Matthew Le Maitre, who is the data controller for the personal data described here.

2. What we collect

"Find me a host" requests: the job you'd like to try, when, what you'd pay, anything you tell us about why, and your email address.

Account information: your name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash), whether you want to host, and any profile photo, bio or listings you add.

Bookings and messages: booking dates, messages between Explorers and Hosts, reviews, and forum posts. Payments are handled by PayPal and Stripe; we receive a record of the payment but never your card details.

Emails you send us and our replies.

Technical data: our web host's server logs record your IP address, the pages you request, and your browser type. We use one essential session cookie to keep you signed in and to protect forms; we use no advertising or analytics cookies.

Business contacts: if you run a business we might invite to host, we may hold your business name and the contact details you publish on your own website.

3. Why we use it, and our legal basis

• To find you a host and arrange a day from a "Find me a host" request: taking steps you have asked for before a contract (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)).
• To run your account and bookings, take payment, and send booking emails: performing our contract with you (Article 6(1)(b)).
• To keep the site secure and stop spam and fraud, using server logs and the session cookie: our legitimate interest in running a safe service (Article 6(1)(f)).
• To contact businesses about hosting: our legitimate interest in finding hosts. Every such email says who we are, and we stop if you ask.
• To keep financial records of bookings and payments: legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)).

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or make automated decisions about you. We send marketing email only as the law allows, and you can opt out at any time.

4. Who we share it with

• Hosts and Explorers: when we match you or you book, the other party sees your name, profile photo and messages. We share a "Find me a host" request with a possible host only as needed to arrange your day.
• Our web host (JAM Hosting), which stores the site, its database and our mailbox.
• Google, whose email service we use to read and answer mail to hello@trymyjob.org.
• PayPal and Stripe, which process payments as controllers under their own privacy policies.
• Services that load parts of our pages: Google Fonts, the jsDelivr and unpkg code libraries, Unsplash images, and OpenStreetMap maps and place search. Your browser sends them your IP address when it loads these; place names you type into the map search go to OpenStreetMap.
• Authorities, if the law requires it.

Some of these providers process data outside the UK. Where they do, the transfer relies on UK adequacy regulations or on the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.

5. How long we keep it

• "Find me a host" requests: until you tell us to stop, and in any case no longer than 2 years.
• Accounts, listings, messages and reviews: while your account is open, and up to 90 days after it closes, to deal with any disputes. Anything tied to a booking or payment is kept with those records.
• Booking and payment records: 6 years from the end of the financial year they belong to, as UK law requires.
• Emails: as long as needed to deal with what they are about, and no longer than 3 years.
• Business contacts: until you opt out, or 3 years after our last contact.

6. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or send it to you or another service in a portable format. You can object at any time to our using it for direct marketing. Email hello@trymyjob.org; we'll answer within one month, or within three months if the law allows us more time for a complex request.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113). We'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

7. Security

The site is served over HTTPS, passwords are hashed, forms are protected against cross-site request forgery, and "Find me a host" requests are stored outside the public part of the site.

8. Children

TryMyJob is for people aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect data from children.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. We'll tell you about significant changes on the site or by email.
